A Minecraft movie review

 

 Overview

A Minecraft movie should be retitled to "A MemeCraft Movie." The movie is severely damaged by its generic and uninspired plot, ridiculous acting, boring characters, and basically is just one big internet meme. And to make matters worse, the visual effects don't look as good as they should.



Plot

A Minecraft Movie suffers from a bland traditional action movie plot that feels incredibly rushed along. The plot follows Steve as he goes to a mine, finds an "orb" and goes to the overworld where an evil Piglin witch is trying to use it to destroy the overworld and Steve has to stop it with help from a bunch of forgettable characters from the real world. Before everything "Withers and Dies" The whole thing is paper thin.
The Piglins
All of the plot is predictable and so ridiculously rushed it's hard to tell what's going on. First there's one fight and then in 10 minutes Steve is running from a massive Piglin "Hog" with almost no context. It makes no sense whatsoever. Character development is nonexistent even to the point where one character says the exact same thing to another about 30 seconds after apologizing for the first time they said it. The villain writing is genuinely garbage and basically the script and lines are incredibly bad. Cheesy lines and bad plot writing are abundant in this film.

The plot line is one of the weakest parts of an already bad film.


Execution.

The execution in this movie is downright awful. Characters overdramatically scream lines, All the Mob designs are downright awful, and overall, the choice to go Live Action was a bad one. One of the worst designs was the Villager. Who, for some reason, is used in a side plot that literally exists for no reason besides memes. The film is literally a massive internet meme.

One of the main examples is Steve. Jack Black basically shouts every single Minecraft item and mob throughout the movie. Every other character is just... boring. The plot is rushed, poorly written and is not "Minecraft" at all. The movie looks like Minecraft, but it fails miserably to capture the essence of the game. The execution is miserable.


Characters

The characters all stink. The villain is bland and generic and all the characters besides Steve are just flat out boring. Henry is underdeveloped, Garret is generic, and Natalie and Dawn don't have enough screen time to do literally anything. Steve, however, has become the laughingstock of the internet. Jack Black's cringe-worthy performance as Steve adds another layer to the Memes.

All the characters, besides maybe Steve and Garret, show near to no development throughout the story. All the characters are bland, generic and just bad. The only thing they have going for them is a Steve's meme filled script.



Verdict

The Minecraft movie is a meme fueled disaster which's success is bad for the future of adaptations. The film suffers from a bad plot, generic characters and terrible monster designs.


Acting: 40

Jack Black did not need to dramatically shout the name of every item in Minecraft. The kid's actor's performance left something to be desired.


Soundtrack: 20

I will never unhear Lava Chicken.


Execution: 10

They completely fail at capturing Minecraft in film form. There could not be more areas they could fail in.

Looks: 20

While the world looks good, sometimes, the mobs look absolutely horrible.


Plot: 10

The plot is bland and generic and literally could be used for anything other than Minecraft and it wouldn't matter.



Overall: 19 💢

A Minecraft movie is one of the, if not the worst, adaptations I've ever seen. This film suffers from everything from awful songs to a horrible plot. This is 100% skippable.

    Pre-Opinion As someone who has never played Unreal Tournament (I was always a Quake guy.) This was still the coolest looking episode. Vampire Survivors Video Game Review.

  Pre-Opinion Game's cover. When I first saw this game, I saw someone playing it on Xbox game pass. I though... "All you do is move. That looks like a very meh game." But when I saw a friend playing it on Steam Deck, I had a second thought. I was getting bored of Halo and already beat Half-Life, so I was looking for something to play.
